Charting Self & Here I Stand

In these anxious times, churches are reporting:

  • Higher rates of burnout and turnover among leaders
  • Increase blaming and victim-thinking among members
  • More destructive conflict
  • Abrupt withdrawl of members

In addressing these trends, church leaders have learned that short-term solutions and quick fixes fail to address the multi-generational patterns which characterize the functioning of their congregations

LMPC offers a way of thinking about and approaching change which takes time but reaches deeper. Drawing on Bowen family systems theory, Charting Self and the Here I Stand process aim to elicit change by challenging church leaders and members to grow more "solid self."

Charting Self: The Beliefs Chart as a Tool for Change

Charting Self is a one-day workshop which introduces the Beliefs Chart (see below) as a tool for understanding and changing self. (Click here for a sample workshop outline.) See Schedule of Events page for dates and locations of LMPC-coordinated Charting Self workshops. Churches and other groups can also contract with LMPC to conduct a Charting Self workshop. Interested groups should contact LMPC.

Here I Stand: The Process

The Here I Stand process is a multi-year approach which aims to elicit change in congregations by inviting changes in individual members. Using a Beliefs Chart (see below), Here I Stand invites participants to become more aware over time of the interplay between their beliefs and relationships. As individuals become more clear on beliefs and principles which are their own -- apart from relationship pressures -- they can contribute to the steadier functioning of their congregations. Two Ways to Benefit from Here I Stand

Here I Stand Clinic :The Here I Stand Clinic offers individuals an opportunity to engage in the process for themselves, working with Bob Williamson, who serves with LMPC in an Adjunct Faculty role. The clinic is offered by phone.  See brochure for tuition and other details.

Here I Stand: Leading Change Through Self-Differentiation: This is a three-day training event which equips participants to facilitate the Here I Stand process in their congregations. Tuition for this event is $325.

Contact LMPC or click below to download a registration brochure for either the Here I Stand Clinic or the three-day training event.

Using a Beliefs Chart

The Here I Stand process employs a Beliefs Chart to help participants think about their beliefs and their relationships.

Beliefs Chart  Reading a Beliefs Chart

Reading a Beliefs Chart involves assessing whether changes in one's beliefs or principles had to do with changes in "solid self" thinking, or whether they reflect a "pseudo-self" posture.

To learn more about the Beliefs Chart, explore LMPC's Charting Self: Using the Beliefs Chart as a Tool for Change.

To engage in a long-term effort to develop your own Beliefs Chart, explore LMPC's Here I Stand Clinic.
